Tokyo–Yokosuka: 1976–1983 Magenta Foundation
Publication2019

The Office of Gilbert Li was tasked with designing the third of an informal trilogy of monographs featuring Greg Girard’s earliest photos. His photographs from Tokyo–Yokosuka 1976–1983, largely unseen since they were first taken, present a pre-Blade Runner, scruffy Tokyo moments before the city exploded into the default ideal of a 21st century metropolis.
The cover uses GT Pressura, a typeface that was inspired by letters stamped onto shipping boxes, an appropriate homage to the portside economies surrounding Tokyo and Yokosuka at the time.
